Walkway and Step Cleaning in Lansingburgh

Green film on the front steps, gray salt haze on the walkway, dark streaks where the downspout drains. We clean the hard surfaces around your home exterior, explain what caused the buildup, and give you an honest read on how clean each spot will get before we start.

What this cleaning covers and when it makes sense

This service is for the flat and stepped hard surfaces around your house: concrete walkways, paver paths, stone or concrete steps, entry landings and the borders along the foundation. Over time they collect algae, mildew, tracked-in dirt, winter salt residue and tannin stains from leaves and seeds.

It is the right call when a surface looks dingy all over, turns slick when wet, or has spots that ordinary sweeping and a garden hose won't touch. It is not a fix for cracked, heaved or crumbling concrete. If we see damage like that, we'll point it out and tell you cleaning won't change it.

A clean entry also finishes off the look of a house. If you have permanent lighting along the roofline, the light falls on the walkway and steps at night, so the ground below is what people see first.

What we do on a walkway and step visit

A walk-through before any water

We look at each surface with you, note stains, loose pavers and cracks, and tell you what we expect to remove and what will likely stay.

Pre-treatment for organic growth

Algae, moss and mildew get a cleaning solution first so they release from the surface instead of being blasted around. This is gentler on concrete and stone.

Even cleaning across the whole area

We use a rotary surface tool that keeps the spray a fixed distance from the ground. That avoids the stripes and wand marks you often see after a do-it-yourself job.

Spot work on stubborn stains

Rust from furniture legs, leaf tannins and some oil spots get their own treatment. Some deep stains fade rather than disappear, and we'll say so beforehand.

Protecting what's nearby

Plants, door thresholds, siding edges and light fixtures get covered or rinsed so overspray and solution don't sit on them.

Rinse and cleanup

We rinse the area, clear debris from paver joints and drains, and leave the surfaces ready to walk on.

Signs your walkways and steps need cleaning

  • Steps feel slippery after rain

A thin green or black film on shaded steps is usually algae. It gets slick when wet and is the most common reason people call us.

  • White haze left after winter

Rock salt and ice melt leave a chalky residue that sweeping won't lift. Left alone for seasons, it can wear at the surface of concrete.

  • Dark patches under trees and downspouts

Constant moisture and leaf litter stain these spots first. They tend to look worse every year.

  • Weeds and moss in paver joints

Growth between pavers holds water and can loosen the joint sand over time.

  • The entry looks dull next to the house

If the siding and trim look fine but the walkway looks tired, a cleaning usually brings the whole front back into line.

How the job day runs

  1. 1

Quote by phone, then a look

You call, describe the areas, and we set a time to see them. You get a free quote that lists each surface so nothing is a surprise.

  2. 2

    Prep and protection

We move small items, cover plants close to the work, and check that water has somewhere to drain away from the foundation.

  3. 3

    Treat, clean and spot clean

Organic growth is pre-treated, then we clean each surface evenly and go back to the problem stains.

  4. 4

    Final rinse and walk-through

We rinse everything down, clean up, and walk the area with you so you can see the result before we leave. Most surfaces are dry and walkable within a few hours.

What moves the cost of cleaning walks and steps

Price depends on what we're cleaning and what it's covered with, not on a flat number. We'll explain each item on your quote so you know why it costs what it does. Here is what makes the biggest difference.

Square footage
A short front walk and a set of steps is a smaller job than a long side path plus a back landing. Size is the starting point.
Type of surface
Broom-finish concrete cleans differently than pavers or natural stone. Pavers take longer because the joints need attention too.
How heavy the buildup is
Years of algae, moss or salt residue need more pre-treatment and more passes than a surface cleaned recently.
Specialty stains
Rust, oil and leaf tannins each need separate treatment. We list them on the quote so you can decide which ones are worth the extra work.
Access and steps
Narrow side yards, stairs and areas tight against plantings slow the work and need more protection.

Questions we hear most about walkways and steps

Something not covered here? (518) 754-0962

Will cleaning damage my concrete or pavers?

Not when it's done at the right pressure with the right tool. We pre-treat growth so we don't need high pressure to remove it, and the rotary tool keeps the spray even. If a surface is already flaking or crumbling, we'll tell you before we start.

Can you get every stain out?

No, and we won't pretend otherwise. Algae, mildew and dirt almost always come out. Old rust and oil that have soaked deep into concrete often lighten but leave a shadow, and we'll show you which spots fall into that group during the walk-through.

How long will it stay clean?

That depends on shade, moisture and trees. Sunny walks can stay clean for a few years, while shaded steps on the north side of a house can show green again within a season or two. We'll tell you what to expect for your spots.

Is the cleaning solution safe for my lawn and plants?

We cover or pre-wet plants near the work and rinse them afterward, which keeps the solution from sitting on leaves. Let us know about pets so we can keep them inside until things are rinsed and dry.

Do I need to be home?

No. We just need a clear path to the areas and a hose connection on the outside of the house. If you'd like to look over the finished work with us, tell us when you're free and we'll time the last step around your schedule.

What time of year is best?

Spring is popular because it clears off winter salt and grime. Any dry stretch from spring through fall works, as long as temperatures stay above freezing so rinse water doesn't ice up.
